Knowing Your Breast Health

Knowing Your Breast Health Cincinnati Plastic Surgery

It’s October, which means it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At Cincinnati Plastic Surgery, one of the many types of plastic surgery we perform on a regular basis are breast procedures. Knowing your breast history is important when it comes to having a breast surgery. If you’re considering breast plastic surgery from Cincinnati Plastic Surgery, knowing your breast health will be important.

Stay Honest During Your Consultation

During your breast plastic surgery consultation, you’ll be asked a number of different questions. Some of those questions will be easy for you to answer, such as if you breast fed, have had children, or what your ideal breast size is. However, you may have a hard time answering some of the other questions for fear of embarrassment. There’s no reason to be embarrassed about the answers to any of the questions asked during your consultation. In fact, it’s important to stay honest during the consultation. The way you answer the questions will determine some of the surgical approaches that Dr. Martin takes for your surgery.

Know Your Family History

One of the main categories of questions asked during your consultation is your family history. Knowing your family history is crucial when it comes to breast surgery. For instance, one of the biggest questions we’ll ask is about your family history. If there’s history of breast cancer or other types of problems with breasts, such as breast cysts or biopsies done on breasts, in your family, we may require clearance from a breast surgeon before scheduling your breast implants surgery.

Have Regular Mammograms

Even without breast implants, it’s important to have regular mammograms. Mammograms are one of the most effective ways to detect breast cancer. Depending on your age when you have breast augmentation at our practice, we may say you need a mammogram before we’ll perform surgery. Usually, this is when you’re 35 to 40 years old. It’s also important to have mammograms based on current recommendations once you have breast implants to make sure you don’t have breast cancer.

Implants Do Not Cause Cancer

That being said, breast implants do not cause breast cancer. In fact, there’s evidence that having breast implants may reduce your risk of developing breast cancer in your lifetime. Just remember you need to schedule all mammograms based on professional recommendations. It can help catch breast cancer. Depending on the placement of your breast implants, it will be easier to see if there’s any abnormalities in your breasts on a mammogram.

Knowing your breast health will help when it comes to knowing what’s normal for your breasts and what isn’t normal for your breasts following surgery. With breast implants, it’s important to have regular screenings based on doctor recommendations to maintain your breast health. At Cincinnati Plastic Surgery, we may also require certain things before having your surgery, including having a mammogram. Interested in breast implants? Turn to the surgeon other surgeons go to.
